MathMagic Pro Edition is an equation editor mainly for use with Adobe
Æ InDesignô software in editing any mathematical expressions and symbols with WYSIWYG interface and various powerful features.
This document contains the latest information about MathMagic Pro. Please read this document carefully before using the software.

* What's New (v1.0)
v1.0 - June 13, 2003
  • New authentification interface introduced. User can try upto MathMagic 50 times before they decide to buy.
  • Tip of the day feature is added so that user can see helpful information after MathMagic startup.
  • Changed the way to save MMF data in WMF file
  • Modified the margin and width of Templates to get the same output in MathMagic Windows edition like the Mac Edition.
  • Add the compatibilty with the MathType file formats. Now MathMagic can import EPS or WMF files which are saved by MathType. (Not final for this feature and still under development)
  • Fixed : InDesign can't get MathMagic equation data due to a communication error when the equation size is over about 4K
  • Fixed : Don't make the Equation vault folder(.eqdb) when there is no equations in the InDesign documnt.

* How MathMagic Pro application and MathMagic Plug-in works

1. Installing

  • Install MathMagic Pro Edition for Windows with the MathMagic Pro installer.
  • Make sure that MathMagic plug-in is installed in the following location.
    \Program Files\Adobe\InDesign 2.0\Plug-ins\Equations

2. Creating Equations

  • Launch Adobe InDesign application(v2.0.2 or higher is recommended).
  • Make a new InDesign document or open a document.
  • Select the Plug-ins menu -> MathMagic sub-menu.
  • Choose "New Equation" item to create an equation.
    If the cursor is located in the text box, the equation will be inserted in the cursor position as an In-line Graphic(ILG). Otherwise, the equation will be placed as an EPS graphic on where you click the mouse.
  • You may select the Sigma tool button from the floating main toolbar to create an equation box, and then drag a rectangle in the document to specify the location of an equation once created by the external MathMagic Pro.
  • You may also right button click while the cursor is in the text box, so that you can choose the "New Equation" from the contextual menu.
  • If you either select "New Equation" menu or drag a rectangle with th Sigma tool, MathMagic Pro application will be launched, if not running already, and an empty equationd editor window will be opened. In case MathMagic Pro application is not launched automatically within a few seconds, please launch the application manually from the following location.
    \Program Files\MathMagic Pro\MathMagicPro.exe

  • Enter any equation in the MathMagic editor window, and then Close(cmd-W) or Save(cmd-S) the window. This will send the equation to the InDesign document back.

3. Editing Equations

  • Choose "Edit Equation..." item to edit the currently selected equation. Or, just double-click on the equation box to open it with the external MathMagic Pro application for editing. You may also control-click on the equation to bring up the contextual menu, after changing the cursor to the Arrow tool.
  • After creating or editing of equation with the external MathMagic Pro, just close the equation editor window so that the equation is placed in the InDesign document.

  • The baseline of all equations will be automatically adjusted. But if you want to lower or raise the baseline, you may do so.
    • just change the cursor to the arrow cursor and move the equation box by dragging to where you desire, or
    • control-click on the equation box to bring up the contextual menu, and then select "Shift Baseline" item, or
    • select an equation box and choose "Shift Baseline" menu from the MathMagic plug-in menu

  • Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, NT
  • AdobeÆ InDesignô v2.0.2 or newer
    (v2.0 or 2.0.1 is not tested.)
    (InDesign Japanese version is not tested.)
  • 5MB of available memory
  • About 15MB of hard disk space for a complete installation

* Installation
Double click on the MathMagic Pro installer icon to begin and proceed the installation.
The Installer application runs on Windows platform.
Below files are installed in your hard disk.
  • MathMagic Pro Edition folder in the Program Files folder of the local disk otherwise specified by user.
  • MathMagic Plug-in in the Equations folder in the InDesign Plug-ins folder
  • ReadMe and other documents
  • MathMagic Fonts (TrueType) in \Windows\Fonts directory on the local boot disk
  • Sample equation Clips in "Clips folder" folder in the MathMagic User Data.
