MathMagic Pro Edition for Adobe InDesign is an equation editor mainly for use with Adobe InDesign software in editing any mathematical expressions and symbols with WYSIWYG interface and various powerful features.


Required components for Windows XP users.
If the following message is displayed when MathMagic is launched :
"This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."
Please vist this Microsoft page, download and run "vcredist_x846.exe".

Note for Windows Vista users.
If some OpenType fonts are not installed by the installer, please install MathMagic OpenType fonts manually.
For more information about Windows Vista compatibility, please read the ReadMeFirst document in the installed MathMagic folder inside \Program Files\ folder.






* What's New (v4.81), December 30, 2009
  • Added: "Close All Detached Palettes" command added to Window menu.

  • Changed: Multiple occurrences of the same Macro supported in the Save As dialog and Batch Conversion dialog.

  • Fixed: Some Greek symbols not converted by LaTeX converter.
  • Fixed: Some Math style information was not maintained after font, face or size changes.
  • Fixed: plus(+) and equal(=) signs did not maintain its Operator font style after copy and Paste or reopening.
* What's New (v4.8), December 3, 2009
  • Added: Copy As Google Docs equation, Copy As Zoho equation commands added to Edit menu so that MathMagic equation can be pasted into Google Docs Equation editor window or Zoho Equation Editor window.
  • Added: The URL of Google Docs equation which contains its LaTeX expression can be pasted into MathMagic window. MathMagic parses the URL to extract the LaTeX expression.
  • Added: When pasting a TeX expression, Plain TeX conversion will be done prior to LaTeX conversion if CAPS LOCK key is being pressed.

  • Changed: "Copy and Export rate" setting moved from Preferences dialog to Import/Export Options dialog - General pane.
  • Changed: Default Copy and Export rate changed to 200%. User can change it to 100% ~ 800% from Import/Export Options dialog.

  • Fixed: Reset Nudge menu is enabled correctly only when there is a nudged part in the selection.
  • Fixed: LaTeX \sum now has better handling of its under over script box.

  • Added: Convert... added under File menu for batch conversion.
  • Added: Supports Custom file name with Macros in Save As dialog. Macros include: {DOCNAME}, {Y} for Year, {M} for Month, {D} for Date, {H} for Hour, {m} for Minute, {S} for Second, {#} ~ {#5} for auto increased number. {Y2} {M2} {D2} {H2} {m2} {S2} also available for fixed 2-digit values.
  • Added: User defined default Path supported for 'Save As' and Batch conversion dialogs, which can be specified in the Import/Export options dialog - 'Paths' pane.

  • Fixed: Template and Symbol toolbar not displayed when launched by InDesign or QuarkXPress.

* How MathMagic Pro application and MathMagic Plug-in works

1. Installing

  • Install MathMagic Pro Edition for Windows with the MathMagic Pro installer.
  • Make sure that MathMagic plug-in is installed in the following location.
    \Program Files\Adobe\InDesign CS4\Plug-ins\

2. Creating Equations

  • Launch Adobe InDesign application(2.x ~ CS4).
  • Make a new InDesign document or open a document.
  • Select the Plug-ins menu -> MathMagic sub-menu.
  • Choose "New Equation" item to create an equation.
    If the cursor is located in the text box, the equation will be inserted in the cursor position as an In-line Graphic(ILG). Otherwise, the equation will be placed as an EPS graphic on where you click the mouse.
  • You may select the Sigma tool button from the floating main toolbar to create an equation box, and then drag a rectangle in the document to specify the location of an equation once created by the external MathMagic Pro.
  • You may also right button click while the cursor is in the text box, so that you can choose the "New Equation" from the contextual menu.
  • If you either select "New Equation" menu or drag a rectangle with th Sigma tool, MathMagic Pro application will be launched, if not running already, and an empty equation editor window will be opened. In case MathMagic Pro application is not launched automatically within a few seconds, please launch the application manually from the following location.
    \Program Files\MathMagic Pro\MathMagic Pro 4.2 InD.exe

  • Enter any equation in the MathMagic editor window, and then Close(cmd-W) or Save(cmd-S) the window. This will send the equation to the InDesign document back.

3. Editing Equations

  • Choose "Edit Equation..." item to edit the currently selected equation. Or, just double-click on the equation box to open it with the external MathMagic Pro application for editing. You may also control-click on the equation to bring up the contextual menu, after changing the cursor to the Arrow tool.
  • After creating or editing of equation with the external MathMagic Pro, just close the equation editor window so that the equation is placed in the InDesign document.

  • The baseline of all equations will be automatically adjusted. But if you want to lower or raise the baseline, you may do so.
    • just change the cursor to the arrow cursor and move the equation box by dragging to where you desire, or
    • control-click on the equation box to bring up the contextual menu, and then select "Shift Baseline" item, or
    • select an equation box and choose "Shift Baseline" menu from the MathMagic plug-in menu


* System Requirements
  • Pentium or Faster
  • Windows 98 or newer including Vista
  • Adobe InDesign™ v2.0.1 or newer including CS ~ CS4
  • About 15MB of hard disk space for a complete installation

* Installation
  • If installing on Windows XP or earlier,
    • Download the latest Installer from download page
    • Double click on the installer icon to proceed the installation
    • Launch MathMagic application from Windows menu or from the following location:
      \Program Files\MathMagic Pro Edition\
  • If installing on Windows Vista,
    • Download the latest Installer from download page
    • Right-click on the installer application, and select 'Properties".
    • Select "Windows XP" compatibility mode, and turn on "Run as an Administrator" privilege.
      (This is to make the installer install MathMagic OpenType fonts correctly. Otherwise, some OpenType fonts may not be installed automatically even if they can be installed manually.)
    • Then, double click on the installer icon to proceed the installation.
    • After installation, select MathMagic application from the following location:
      \Program Files\MathMagic Pro Edition\
    • Right-click on it, select 'Properties".
    • Select "Windows XP" compatibility mode, and turn on "Run as an Administrator" privilege.
      (This is to make MathMagic read/write Registry correctly. Otherwise, Registry error message might be displayed.)
    • Then, launch MathMagic application.
  • If MathMagic Plug-in is updated,
    • please download the MathMagic plugins and the copy the correct version(for CS, CS2, CS3 or CS4) to
      \Program Files\Adobe\InDesign CS4\Plug-ins\
  • Please NOTE that MathMagic Pro for QXP application works only with its accompanying MathMagic XTensions, while MathMagic Pro for InD application only works with its MathMagic Plug-ins.
    So, if you need to work with both InDesign and QuarkXPress, you need to install both MathMagic Pro for InDesign and MathMagic Pro for QuarkXPress separately.
